it's already four feet above flood stage... and estimates continue to grow. experts now expect it to crest overnight wednesday... at 18.5 feet. that would mean... all levee gates close at water works park... and across george flagg parkway at southwest 18th. this morning, you can plan on fleur drive being closed... the public works department closed it around 3-o'clock yesterday. water build-up in waterworks park... has already forced jolly holiday lights to close for the season - two-weeks early. the des moines river is creeping up this morning as well... it currently sits over 26 feet... that's two feet above flood stage. crest is expected for tomorrow afternoon... at 27.5 feet. barricades are also up along the bike trail near 63rd and grand. walnut creek is covering a portion of the trail under the grand avenue bridge. this december downpour has the community of luther up against a wall. on top on non-stop rain... the
leaving their homes unlivable today... crews worked all day to help homeowners pump water from their basements... by afternoon, the city park had flooded and water was also threatening city hall... kristen hethcot has lived in luther for 11 years and says she's never seen it this bad before.. "what worries me most is my basement wall probably will collapse in if it doesn't keep going. "i wish it would have snowed...haha because then my septic tank wouldn't be full and i could use the toilet and laundry and do dishes." the county's emergency management has been told to prepare for the des moines river to rise another 10 feet by thursday. that would put the river over it's banks... several homes in ames looked similar to that... squaw creek left its banks yesterday morning.. spilling into a trailer court near 190th street. the street itself is closed. squaw creek crested overnight
ames police are busy looking for the driver who hit and killed an iowa state student then took off.... 18-year-old emmalee jacobs died yesterday morning... i-s-u police say she was walking across ash avenue onto lincoln way around seven a-m when she was hit. she was taken to the hospital where she later died. ' at this point no ones came forward to say they saw the specific incident, at this point were asking for the publics help, if they were anywhere in that area, campustown specifically lincoln way and ash between 6:30 and 7;00 if they saw any vehicles or they saw people crossing the road at that time wed like them to give us a phone call. friends were forced to put together the pieces as rumors began swirling around campus yesterday morning... they tell us they can only hope the person who did this comes forward...
